EX Cathedra:
Recent Work by Byron Black

“Ex cathedra” translates to “from the chair.” In this series of digital drawings, digital paintings, and sculptural constructions, Byron Black explores the rich imagery and symbolic significance of chairs from utilitarian objects to signifiers of status and power to the poetic possibilities inherent in the connection to the human body and evocation of human absence and/or presence.



Byron Black, an Irving resident and professor of art and design at Dallas College North Lake Campus, has explored archetypal themes, ritual forms, and issues of identity in his work over the last thirty years. His paintings, sculptures, and digital media reveal his interest in unusual materials and techniques. Influenced by Duchamp, Magritte, Balthus, Cornell, and Rauschenberg, his work is surreal, darkly humorous, and charged with the quiet energy of the inner world of thought and emotional significance
